I’m extremely grateful to have been named to the Investopedia 100 this year, and to be right behind Michael Kitces, on the same top ten billing as Ron Carson, Sophia Bera and so many other fine practitioners whom I admire and learn from. This is really a thrill.

Investopedia 100 Top Financial Advisors of 2019 (Investopedia)
Yesterday, we had a married couple visiting our office in New York City. I’ve been working with them for over twelve years now, beginning when I was a retail broker and carrying through to today as an investment advisor representative. But I am not currently their direct advisor anymore, because they work hand in hand with one of the Certified Financial Planners at Ritholtz Wealth – dealing with the stuff that really matters: Can they spend the money they’ve accumulated, when can they and should they pull funds out, what will happen to their plan in the event that they choose to do this or that thing, etc. This is the real work being done by financial advisors for their clients every day.
And so the real point that I want to make is that I began working with them at a time when the questions being considered were “what should we buy, what should we sell? What investment funds look good these days? Is it time to take a profit? Is it time to add more?” My answers were always market answers, or investment answers. This is the way it was done. Now, these answers come from the planning work – work that the highly caring and qualified client-facing advisors in my firm do every day. I am not as useful in this world, and I gladly tell our clients that as I introduce them to the people who are. And it’s a highly gratifying feeling to be able to do that with complete honesty and humility.
As such, I’d like to share this honor with all of the financial advice professionals in my firm who do this important work for a thousand families day after day. I could never be on a list like this without their dedication and expertise.
